Historical Background:
On the 13th of June 1940, the 23rd Colonial Regiment (3rd Colonial Division) was ordered to defend Hill 304, the glorious battlefield of World War One. In the early morning of 14th June, the enemy infantry was seen in the gully between Hill 304 and the Mort-Homme, and some German tanks crossed the bridge at Bethincourt. At 06h30, Hill 304 was in German hands. A counter-attack of the 23rd Colonial Regiment with the support of tanks retook Hill 304 at 08h00. The Germans made a second attack at 10h00 and took again the hill. Another French counter-attack repelled the Germans. A third enemy attack occurred in the afternoon followed by a new French counter-attack. At the end of the day Hill 304 was always in French hands, but at that time the 23rd Colonial Regiment received the order to leave Hill 304 and to withdraw on a new defense line at Bois-Bourrus.
