Historical Background:
From the 16th of May 1940, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) withdrew on the Escaut River, in order to avoid the surroundings due to the German breakthrough at Sedan. On the 21st of May, German infantry of the 31.ID crossed the river and made a thin bridgehead near the village of Pecq. The Grenadier Guards , 1st Infantry Division, counter-attacked and recaptured Poplar Ridge and the control of the river banks. For heroic action in the battle, Lance-corporal H. Nicholls won a Victoria Cross. Missing in action, in fact prisoner of war, Nicholls received his medal in June 1945 only when he came back from the prisoners camp in Germany.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
