Historical Background:
When the Germans attacked in the West on the 10th of May 1940, the Allies applied Dyle plan and the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) took positions on the banks of the Dyle River between the cities of Wavre and Louvain. The 3rd Infantry Division under the command of Major-General B. Montgomery was on the first line at Louvain in close contact with the Belgian army. From the 14th of May, German soldiers of the 19.ID attacked in the area of Louvain station but were contained by British and Belgian units (4th Chasseurs). On the evening of the 16th May, following the orders of Lord Gort commander of the BEF, the 3rd Infantry Division began to withdraw on a new defensive position on the Escaut River.
