Historical Background:
On the 5th of June 1940 began the German operation "Fall Rot", a general offensive on the Somme and Aisne rivers to finish a French army weakened after the terrible campaign of May. Always in the area in front of Abbeville and Saint Valéry-sur-Somme, the Scottish soldiers of the 51st Highland Division were attacked by enemies forces superior in number. The 7th Argyll & Sutherland Highlander had its battalion HQ at Franleu and the village was quickly surrounded by the enemy. With only one mortar and some BREN light machine-guns, the Scottish soldiers made a fierce resistance against the Germans. Then, because of more and more casualties, the colonel commander of the battalion led the last soldiers to a farm from where they succeeded to break the surroundings and to join the rest of the division.
