Historical Background:
On the 27th of October 1943, for Operation Goodtime, the New Zealand 8th Infantry Brigade Group, part of the US 1st Marine Amphibious Corps, landed on Treasury Islands (part of Salomon Islands). The 29th and 36th Battalions landed on Moro island, near the village of Falamai, occupied by a Japanese garrison of the 7 Kure SNLF (Special Naval Landing Force). For New Zealand, it was the first landing from the battle of Gallipoli in 1915. The two battalions captured the island on the day in spite of a Japanese strong resistance using mortar fire on the beach-head.
