Historical Background:
The village of Colleville-sur-mer had one bunker used as CP of the 3/726, and called Wn63. In the morning of the 6th June, the first US units were exiting from the hell of Omaha Beach. The G Company of Cpt Dawson, 16th Inf Rgt, had bypassed the Wn62 still in action against troops on the beach, and arrived on the west of the village. Dawson captured the church but could not advance farther because of a German counter-attack. During that time the L Company advanced in the small valley of Cabourg and was stopped by the hedgerows. Ltn Jimmy Monteith attacked several German machine-guns which blocked the advance of the company but was killed during the fight. For his bravery during the D-Day, he was posthumously rewarded with the Medal of Honor.
