Historical Background:
French General Blanchard, commander of the 1st Army who was fighting in the area of Lille, had ordered the withdrawal of his troops towards the Lys River during the night 27th to 28th of May. But in the same time, the German tanks of General Rommel succeeded to cross the canal at La Bassée and were advancing to the North. The French troops advancing to the North-West found their way cut by the panzers. The only 3rd Army Corps crossed the Deûle River before the arrival of German troops. Most of units of the 4th and 5th Army Corps were blocked on the river and trapped in the suburbs of Lille after an exhausting walk and a night battle against the enemy tanks.
