Historical Background:
On the 3rd of July 1944, the mission of the 90th US ID was to capture the Mont Castre. The attack began at 05h30 but was stopped after an advance of one kilometer by the German main line of defense. The small hamlet of Les Sablons changed owners several times on this day. The 90th US ID lost 600 men in front of the Germans entrenched in the hedgerows and supported by assault guns ans some half-tracks. The hamlet of Les Sablons was the far end of the US advance in this sector.
