Historical Background:
In the morning of the D-Day, the US paratroopers of the 505th PIR (82nd Airborne Division) invested Ste-Mere-Eglise. Lt TurnerTurnbull was ordered to make a roadblock on the road to Montebourg in the village of Neuville-au-Plain. Once arrived on the place, the 41 paratroopers entrenched in a hedgerow and in a farm north of the village. Half an hour later, the enemy appeared on the road : about 190 soldiers of the Grenadier Regiment.1058 supported by some tanks and assault guns. The battle lasted in the afternoon when Lt Turnbull decided to withdraw because of the many losses the paratroopers suffered. In the 25 losses, there was Sergeant Robert Niland (one of the four Niland brothers). By his action, Lt Turnbull had succeeded to stop the German advance towards Ste-Mere-Eglise. On the 7th of June, he was killed by a mortar shell.
