Historical Background:
Lt Col Krause, commander of the 3rd battalion/505th PIR, invested Sainte-Mère-Eglise in the early morning of the D-Day and ordered to put some roadblocks on all access of the city. A German artillery battery at Fauville began to fire on Sainte-Mère-Eglise. At 09h30, the southern roadblock was attacked by two companies of the Georgian Ost-Bataillon 795 supported by three light tanks and two assault guns from Fauville. The US paratroopers which defended the roadblock succeeded to repulse the enemy, but a US company whose mission was to counter-attack and to destroy the German battery at Fauville lost its way in the hedgerows and failed the counter-attack. Then, paratroopers of the 2nd battalion (Lt Col Vandervoort) arrived to reinforce the defenders of the roadblock.
