Historical Background:
About 150 paratroopers of the 507th and 508th PIR under the command of LTC Ostberg advanced following the railway, in the morning of 6th June, toward Chef-du-Pont. The objective was to capture the bridge on the Merderet River. In the town, the advance continued toward the bridge but under the enemy fire. LTC Ostberg was wounded when he tried to cross the bridge. Then a German gun situated west of the marshes opened fire and inflicted several losses to the paratroopers. Finally in the evening, some reinforcements arrived and the US paratroopers succeeded to capture the bridge and to consolidate the bridgehead. Mission achieved !
