Historical Background:
General Wyche, commander of the 79th US Infantry Division, had planned to attack La Haye-du-Puits on the 7th of July but a German counter-attack had changed the plan. A SS battalion of the regiment "Der Führer" counter-attacked to retake the control of Montgardon with the support of some tanks and half-tracks. It was a fierce battle but as US troops had the superiority in number, they repelled the enemy assault which stopped with the night. The 79th Infantry Division kept the control of Montgardon but had suffered heavy losses. For the US soldiers, Montgardon had become Bloody Hill.
