Historical Background:
Units of the 1st French Army landed on the Provence coast on the 16th of August 1944. Their first objective was the fortified camp of Toulon. The battle plan was first to surround the fortified perimeter then to attack it by crossing the mountains on the north gates (3rd DIA of General de Monsabert) and on the east coast (1st Free French Division of General Brosset). On the 20th of August the Algerian Riflemen of Colonel de Linarès crossed the high plateau called " le Grand Cap" and surprised the Germans on the rear of their lines. On the east coast, near the city of Hyères the Golf Hôtel bunker denied the crossing of the Gapeau River to the 1st Free French Division. Le Mont Faron fortress was captured by commandos of the Bataillon de Choc and the Coudon fortress by the Commandos d'Afrique. South of the village of Revest-Les-Eaux, the bunker of "la Poudrière" resisted during two days before surrender. On the 23rd of August, the french flag flew over the center of Toulon. On the two following days, the garrisons of all defensive positions in Toulon surrendered and on the 26th of August, the battle of Toulon was over.
