Historical Background: In middle July 1942, Rommel's troops were now in defensive positions but British General Auchinleck launched a new offensive , in the same area Ruweisat/Deir el Shein. In the South, the 2nd New Zealand Division attacked toward El Mreir, in the North the 5th Indian Brigade advanced along Ruweisat Ridge toward Deir el Shein and in the center, the 23rd Armoured Brigade, with "Valentine" infantry tanks, made a cavalry charge between the German positions. Slowed down by a minefield, the Valentine tanks suffered losses by the fire of the 104.IR anti-tank guns (21.Panzer Division) and reached the German second line.
