Historical Background: After the failure of the battle of Alam el Halfa, Rommel ordered the withdrawal of his army on the departure line. At that time, Montgomery launched Operation Beresford, a counter-offensive in order to cut the bulge created by the Axis advance. Beginning in the night 3rd to 4th of September, the British attack was made mainly by two infantry brigades, each of them supported by a tank battalion. On the left, the 5th New Zealand Brigade with Valentine infantry tanks of the 50th RTR advanced towards Deir el Muhafid before to turn off towards Deir el Munassib. The New-Zealand soldiers were stopped by the fire of German grenadiers of the 90.Leichte Division and Italian soldiers of the "Trieste" Division. On the right, the 132nd Infantry Brigade, a green unit from the 44th Infantry Division, advanced towards Deir Alinda with the support of Valentine tanks of the 46th RTR but was quickly pinned down by the fire of paratroopers of the Italian "Folgore" Division and the German "Ramcke" Brigade. After several hours of fighting in close combat in the night, the British Brigade withdrew, suffering heavy losses. At dawn, Rommel launched tanks of the 21.Panzer Division versus the Maoris of the 5th NZ Brigade who were withdrawing too. Operation Beresford was a complete failure for the British troops. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
