Historical Background:
Before the 17th Airborne took part in the largest airborne invasion of the war, they first saw battle in the Ardennes feeling a great need to live up to the already impressive reputations of the 82nd and 101st. Tasked with protecting the flank of Patton's counter-attack out of Bastogne, intelligence suggested they were facing an enemy on the run. The 17th were knocked into reality when they came up against the steel wall of Oberst Otto-Ernst Remer's Fuhrer Belgleit Brigade made up of Panthers, half tracks and elite grenadiers.
Initially Isadore 'Izzy' Jachman was caught in the open by approaching enemy armour but managed to run and grab a bazooka, letting off multiple shots and halting the advancing armour temporarily before being gunned down by machine gun fire. He was awarded the Medal of Honour posthumously. The 17th struggled to keep up with Patton's pace and initially faced criticism. Fierce fighting saw Flamisoulle and Mandy, near Mande-Saint-Étienne, change hands numerous times but they did manage to halt the large German onslaught.
Later, when he understood the forces the 17th were up against, Patton would say that putting the 17th on this job may have been his best decision of the war. The 17th saved the day at a great cost.
