Historical Background: In the evening of the 23rd of October 1942, General Montgomery launched Operation Lightfoot in the north of El Alamein frontline, the decisive battle began. In the south a diversion operation was made by XIIIth Corps in the aim to retain the Axis mobile units deployed in this sector (21.Panzer Division and Division Ariete). For the infantrymen of the Queen Royal Regiment (44th Infantry Division), starting from the Ragil depression, they had to cross the minefield called "January", then to breakthrough the enemy line near Hill 105 (kept by the Italian Airborne Division Folgore) and to let pass the tanks of the 22nd Armoured Brigade. Advancing with the Queens, an engineer Task Force using Matilda Scorpion mine flail tanks had to open several routes in the minefield before dawn. But the hard ground and the shelling of the Italian artillery delayed the British troops who were caught in the open at daybreak. The Italian paratroopers of Raggruppamenti Ruspoli fought fiercely and attacked the tanks with Molotov Cocktail. The British attack was blocked in the minefield with most of the tanks destroyed. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
