Historical Background:
On the first day of the battle of El Alamein, the infantry of the XXXth Corps had reached its objective, the "Oxalic" line. However the British tanks failed to break through the enemy lines in the following battle. The 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade under the command of Lt Col Turner was ordered by the commander of 1st Armoured Division to defend the "Snipe" position, ahead of Kidney Ridge, with the anti-tank guns of the 76th Anti-tank Regiment. During the night 26th to 27th, Turner and his battalion entrenched in a former German position, knowing that the 24th Armoured Brigade was behind Kidney Ridge. At dawn, "Snipe"was attacked by German tanks of the 15.Panzer Division and Italian tanks of the armoured division "Littorio". The two attacks were stopped. Then in the afternoon, Rommel ordered the counter-offensive and launched 70 tanks, Germans and Italians, against the British positions. On "Snipe" the anti-tank guns made a real slaughter of Axis tanks. In the evening, horrified by the heavy losses of his tanks, Rommel stopped his counter-offensive. The soldiers of the 2nd Rifle still alive could withdraw with only two anti-tank guns. Lt Col Turner had won a Victoria Cross for this heroic battle.
