Historical Background:
On the 8th of June 1940, the German 98.Infanterie Division reached Attichy, north of the river Aisne. The French soldiers of the 170th Infantry Regiment who defended the river blown the bridge just before the Germans crossed it. On the morning of the 9th June, the soldiers of IR 289 crossed the river with rubber boats. The French machine-guns and artillery made a lot of losses in the enemy ranks. But during the day, with the air support of the Luftwaffe, the German infantry could establish a bridge-head on the south bank of the river and quickly built a pontoon bridge. The day after, 10th of June, despite the valorous defense of the 170th Infantry Regiment, the enemy advance could continue towards Paris.
