As General Patton ordered to the commander of IIIrd US Army Corps to run to Bastogne, the 4th Armored Division had to advance with its two Combat Command to the besieged city. Combat Command B was stopped in front of Chaumont because of an ambush. It needed several hours of fighting, on the 23rd of December, to obliged the enemy to withdraw to Hompré. But the Germans made quickly a counter-attack with Panther tanks and Sturmgeschutz. They destroyed 11US tanks and the village of Chaumont was recaptured by the enemy. Chaumont and Grandru were definitively liberated by US troops only on the 25th of December.
