Historical Background:
From late November 1942, the Fallschirmjägers of Major Witzig were entrenched on djebel Azzag (called Green Hill by British troops). On the 5th of January 1943, the "Red Devils" of the 3rd Parachute Battalion of lieutenant-colonel Pine-Coffin attacked in order to capture this strategic position on the road of Mateur. The British assault began in the night and the Red Devils succeeded to infiltrate the German defenses on the hill because of the darkness. The first German counter-attack was repelled with bayonets and grenades. But the second attack of the Fallschirmjägers supported by mortar fire repelled the Red Devils down of the hill.
