Historical Background:
December 1942 - New Guinea.
The US landing on Guadalcanal in August 1942 surprised the Japanese troops in their offensive towards Port Moresby, and this threat on their rear obliged them to withdraw to their starting points, Buna and Gona. In Buna, Japanese soldiers had time to fortified their positions before the Allied attack, particularly in the Duropa plantation area. On the 17th of December 1942, with the support of some light tanks, Australian troops of 18th Infantry Brigade and US troops of 126th Infantry Regiment assaulted the Japanese defensive positions. Fierce jungle fights, often to close combat, lasted until 31st of December in the "Old trip" airfield area. In January 1943, the eastern part of the Japanese bridgehead was in Allied hands.
