Historical Background: The US command needed to have a pontoon bridge on the Moselle River at Thionville in order to launch the 10th US Armoured Division towards the Saar region, so the 2/378th Infantry of 95th US Infantry Division was ordered to cross the river, capture Fort Yutz and make a solid bridge-head on the other bank of the river. The US infantry battalion crossed the river on assault boats and attacked fort Yutz from the island by crossing the little canal on two foot bridges. Once the bridge-head was realized, the 2/378th continued its attack against Fort Illange, a Maginot line fortress. During this time, the US engineers built the pontoon bridge on the river. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
