Historical Background:
On the 10th of June 1940, the 9th French Army Corps of General Ihler was withdrawing from the Bresle River to the Seine River, but the German armoured divisions were faster and outflanked it on the east. Then the 5.Panzer Division went back to the west to surround the French troops, in particular the 40th Infantry Division who had to cross the road Dieppe-Tôtes at Biville-la-Baignarde. To cover the retreat of the division, the 53rd Battalion of Alpine Light Infantry was ordered to entrench in the village and to defend it. In the afternoon, the French units arriving near Biville were spotted in the open field by German tanks which burst in the area. The French soldiers had to cross Biville under the fire of the tanks and reach Beaumont to continue the retreat toward Rouen. This battle was deadly to some battalions already decimated by previous fighting on the Bresle River.
