Historical Background:
On the 6th June 1940, the battalions of Alpine Light Infantry of the 40th Infantry Division, the "Blue Division", had made strong points south of the Liger stream. On the 7th June, the Germans had attacked on the east flank of the division and captured Bezencourt in spite of the defense of the 67th Battalion. On the 8th June, the German 32.Infanterie Division attacked on the whole line of the Liger. German grenadiers, supported by several artillery batteries, some armored cars and the "Stuka" dive bombers, crossed the stream and infiltrated between the French strong points. After a hard day of battle, the French received the order to retreat on the Bresle River line. The break off was not easy for the fighting units, some companies had to charge with bayonets to extricate from the surrounding.
