Historical Background:
After the capture of the Mareth line, the British troops were stopped by a new Axis defense line on Wadi Akarit. General Montgomery launched then a new offensive, Operation Scipio, in the night 5 to 6 April 1943. The 1/2 Gurkhas (5th Indian Brigade) attacked in the darkness with bayonets and Kukris, Italian troops of the 2nd Battalion of Division Pistoia, entrenched on hills of Djebel Meida. Subadar Lal Bahadur Thapa led his soldiers in a ravine and destroyed several enemy machine-guns nests. His bravery stimulated the Gurkhas which captured the hills, opening the way for the main body of the Brigade. For his action, Subadar Thapa was rewarded of a Victoria Cross by King Georges VI.
