Historical Background:
In the first phase of Operation Epsom, on the 26th of June 1944, Scottish battalions of the 44th Brigade (15th Lowland Infantry Division) had to capture the village of St Manvieu. This one was defended by the 1/26, 1st Battalion of SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 26 (12.SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend). Supported by Churchill tanks of the 9th RTR and some Crocodile flame-thrower tanks, the Royal Scots and Royal Scots Fusiliers had to fight for each building to repelled the SS soldiers. It was in the evening only that Saint Manvieu was definitively clear of German soldiers. The British could now begin the phase two of Operation Epsom, the race to Odon River.
