Historical Background:
The Sangro River, which flows in the Adriatic Sea, was part of the defenses of the German Gustav Line but the soldiers of the 65.Infanterie Division were in fact entrenched on several hills situated five kilometers north of the Sangro. General Montgomery ordered the 5th British Corps to cross the river and to attack the German defense line on the hills. On the 27th of November the 17th Indian Brigade (8th Indian Division) was ordered to capture the fortified village of Mozzagrogna, on the right flank the 78th Infantry Division had to capture the village of Fossacesia and on the left flank, the 2nd New Zealand Division had to cross the Sangro on the 28th and to attack the village of Castel Frentano. In spite of heavy rains and the rising of the Sangro which carried away three bridges made by British engineers on the river, troops of the 5th Corps reached their objectives in the last days of November and on the 2nd of December for the New-Zealand Division.
