Historical Background:
On the 8th of February 1945, Field Marshall Montgomery launched Operation Veritable by the attack of the 1st Canadian Army on German cities of Cleves and Goch in Rhenany. The British advance was delayed by the defenses of the Siegfried Line and by the very bad weather so the capture of Cleves occurred not until the 13th of February. The mission to capture Goch was ordered to the two Scottish divisions : the 15th Scottish Division and the 51st Highland Division. They had first to clear a wood occupied by units of the 15. Panzer-Grenadier Division then to cross an anti-tank ditch who shield the city. On the 18th of February, the AVRE tanks of the 79th Armoured Division laid a bridge on the anti-tank ditch allowing to other tank units to cross the obstacle. Then to clear the city, the Scottish infantrymen had the support of "Wasp" flame-thrower tanks. Finally the city of Goch fell in British hands on the 20th of February.
