Historical Background:
On the 26th of November 1942, the Soviet army launched an offensive against Velikie Louki with the 3rd Shock Army under the command of Major-General Galitski. The next day the city was surrounded. In spite of several German counter-attacks from Novosokolniki, the Velikie Louki"festung" stayed cut from the German lines. The defendeurs, entrenched into the walls of the old fortress and armed with 22 Multiple Rocket Launchers "Nebelwerfer", resisted during two months. But the Soviet troops received reinforcements withe flame-thrower tanks KV-8. Finally on the 15th of January, with no more supply nor ammunitions, the last defenders tried to escape on small groups or had to surrender to the Soviet troops.
