Historical Background: 26th of August 1942 - Milne Bay. While Japanese troops of general Horii were engaged on the Kokoda trail towards Port-Moresby, Amiral Mikawa organized a landing in Milne bay on the eastern side of Papuasy to bypass Allied troops and seize the airfields of the area. But the ground, swampy or covered by jungle, between mountain and the sea, was not easy for an advance after landing. On the 27th of August, Japanese infantry captured KB Mission with the support of light tanks then seized Gili Gili village, driving out 2/10th Australian Infantry Battalion and inflicting them heavy casualties. After that Japanese troops advanced toward an airfield under construction : n°3 Strip. This one, changed in a quagmire because of the rain was a really shooting range for US and Australian defenders . All Japanese assaults on the open field during the night were repelled and the tanks, bogged down in the mud, were abandoned. In the beginning of September, exhausted, starved, sicks and surrounded by Allied troops, Japanese were obliged to evacuate the bridgehead, a real fiasco. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
