Historical Background:
Tobruk - 13th of April 1941.
Tobruk was surrounded by Axis troops (Italians and Germans) and General Rommel decided to attack quickly with the only forces at his disposal at that time. While Italian divisions "Trento" and "Brescia" made a deception manoeuver on the west side of the perimeter, the 5.Leichte Division (5th Light Division) of the Afrika Korps attacked south-east, along the road of El Adem, and towards the crossroad called" King's Cross". During the night 13th/14th of April, with the support of Italian field artillery and a 88mm gun battery, the 8.MG-Bat and engineers crossed the antitank ditch to open the way of 5.PzRgt. At 03h00 in the morning, the Australian first line was broken and German tanks advanced to the second defensive line. But the 20th Australian Brigade opened a violent antitank fire who stopped the 5.PzRgt and drove back him with 50% of losses. A counter-attack by Matilda tanks of the 7th RTR closed the gap, isolating the German infantrymen in the Allied lines. Lieutenant-colonel Ponath, the German battalion commander, was killed in action with most of his soldiers. That was the first defeat of the Afrika Korps in front of Tobruk.
