Historical Background:
Maquis n°3 of "Service National Maquis" (Resistance organization) was located since 22nd of June in Bois-Blanc camp, near Fontenailles village, at the border of Fretoy forest. It had elaborate system of defense and men were well armed (LMG, bazookas and mortars) owing to several armament airdrops made in May 1944. On the 3rd of July, German troops exhausted by continuous guerrilla actions, was deployed in front of the forest to clear it of the French Resistance. Maquisards, camouflaged in their defensive positions, kept silence and opened fire at point blank. German troops suffered heavy losses but continued their attack with the support of mortars. The combat lasted several hours until the night and the French maquisards withdraw with the security of darkness in the depth of the forest. When the Germans reached the Resistance camp on the next morning, it was empty!
