Historical Background:
15th of May 1941 - Sollum.
General Wawell was informed by "Ultra" documents of Rommel's difficulties after the successive setbacks of Afrikakorps against Tobruk. He decided to counter-attack quickly before the "Desert fox" organized better defensive positions on the border. The British attack was divided in three elements : the main battle group, composed of 22nd Guards Brigade and 4th RTR equipped with Matilda tanks, had to seized Halfaya Pass then advance to Musaïd and Fort Capuzzo. In the same time, the second battle group with 2nd Rifle brigade attacked from the coastal plain to take Sollum. And a third group called "Support Group", composed by 2nd RTR equipped with Cruiser tanks, attacked across the desert towards Sidi Azeiz. Sollum and Halfaya Pass were taken quickly (in the morning of the 15th of May) but Fort Capuzzo, once seized by 9th DCI, was recaptured by an armored counter-attack of Kampfgruppe Von Herff (5.Leichte Division). On the 16th of May, British troops withdraw beyond the Wire but some units remained on Halfaya Pass. The defeat of "Brevity" was complete when Kampfgruppe Von Herff recaptured Halfaya Pass on the 26th of May.
