Historical Background:

Blocked since the end of September 1941 on the Siwasch, a flooded ground between Perekop isthmus and Ichun isthmus, German 54.Armee Korps launched a new offensive on the 17th of October 1941. During eight days it was a tremendous battle with heavy losses on each side. Russians soldiers were killed in their combat positions instead of withdrawing or surrendering. The ground was favourable to the defense because of numerous hillocks which were antic mounds, one of them was known as "Tombe du Hun assis". On the 28th of October, General Von Manstein decided to launch a last and powerful attack to breakthrough the Russian lines. But German assault troops arrived on empty defensive positions : during the night, all Soviet troops had withdrawn towards the fortified camp of Sevastopol. The gate of Crimea was finally open to the German troops.
