Historical Background:
In August 1944, the Allied forces were stopped in front of the GOTHIC LINE that ran from Tirreno sea, next to La Spezia, to Adriatic sea, next to Pesaro.
This defensive line, created by Gen. Kesserling, was builded by TODS, an organisation composed by 15,000 italian workers and by a slovakian technical unit of 2,000 members.
Gun torrets, minefields, wires, bunkers, anti-tank ravines etc., were builded for 10 miles in depth.
Disproportion between tanks and infantry was an obstacle for the Allies: about 100,000 infantrymen had been moved to south France (Dragoon Operation).
5th Army Gen. Clark and 8th Army Gen. Leese took part to the attack on Adriatic side: the "OLIVE" operation, that began on August 25, 1944.
Allies' aim was to break trough the Gothic line and to conquer the cities of Bologna and Ferrara in the Padanian plain.
The advance was slow because of the defensive fire coming from Gemmano and Coriano' eminences.
The situation got worse when it started to rain copiously, streets and fields became suddenly muddy and forced tanks to go slowly.
The operation had a break, and only with springtime, on 21th and 23th of April 1945, Bologna and Ferrara fell.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drown, and you are in command. The rest is history.
