Historical Background:
9th Australian Division was surrounded in the fortified area of Tobruk by Axis forces. General Morshead ordered some "coups de main" outside the defensive perimeter to harass the enemy. Near Ras El Madaouer, hill 201 also called "Carrier hill" was occupied by Bersaglieri of the Armored Division Ariete. These Italian soldiers, under the command of Colonel Fabris, had the support of an artillery battery with 75mm guns. During the night of 22nd of April 1941, one Australian company of 2/48th battalion, supported by three Matildas tanks and two "portees" (antitank guns mounted on light trucks) assaulted Carrier hill. The fighting in the darkness was very hard and Australians rushed into the Italian positions by a bayonet charge. Colonel Fabris was killed in action as well as fifty of his Bersaglieri. The arrival of German 33.Panzerjäger Abteilung in the morning, obliged the Australians to withdraw in their lines.
