Historical Background:
Dantzig - 1st September 1939.
04h45, German warship Schleswig-Holstein, stationed in the harbor of Dantzig for some days, opened fire with its 280mm guns on Westerplatte peninsula, occupied by a Polish infantry company. This was the true beginning of the Polish campaign and therefore of World War 2. Marine assault troops concealed in the hold of the warship landed on Westerplatte while SS Heimwehr Brigade supported by some armored cars attacked the gate of the peninsula. The fierce resistance of major Sucharski Polish soldiers inflicted heavy losses to the invaders which required the help of Luftwaffe dive bombers as well as the naval artillery fire to continue the advance. After 7 days, out of ammunition, Polish troop surrendered to the Germans who granted them with the honors of war for their heroic defense.
