Historical Background:
On the evening of the 6th of June 1944, the 3rd British Infantry Division failed to get one of its D-Day's objective : the capture of Caen. The hard defense of "Hillman" strongpoint and the counter-attack of 21.Panzer division were the causes of this setback. On the 7th of June, the advance of the division should continue towards Caen. The 2nd Warwickshire Battalion, supported by a tank squadron of Staffordshire Yeomanry and by a "Priest" battery of 33rd Field Artillery Regiment, had to seize Lebisey Wood where two companies of Panzer Grenadier Regiment.192 were entrenched. The attack was in the open ground and German panzergrenadiers opened fire when the British infantry arrived less to 200m range. Machine-guns fire made a slaughter in the ranks of "Tommies" but they continued their assault. They were suddenly stopped when Colonel Hardon, commander of 2nd Warwick, was killed in action. Survivors of the British battalion dug in in the field and didn't move anymore. Lebisey Wood stayed in German hands for several weeks more.
