Historical Background: After the fall of Tobruk, Axis forces, under the command of quite new promoted Feldmarchall Rommel, pursued the withdrawing British troops in Egypt. On the 25th of June, the vanguard of Panzer-armee "Afrika" arrived near Marsa Matruh. In a two days battle, the British were once again defeated and received the order to withdraw to El Alamein. But the 2nd New Zealand Division, isolated in Minquar Kaïm, 30 km south of Marsa Matruh, was obliged to breakthrough the enemy lines to escape. It was done in the night of 27th to 28th of June by a bayonet charge in a pitiless combat.German infantrymen of I/104.Schützen Rgt (21.Panzerdivision) sustained the assault.
