Historical Background:
On D-Day at 07h10, three companies of 2nd Rangers Battalion landed in front of Pointe du Hoc. They climbed the cliffs under enemy fire and captured the 1/1160 German artillery battery with the surprise that the guns were not installed in their firing positions. Isolated on the Pointe du Hoc, the Rangers organized a defensive position in spite of the fire of some snipers. Only one platoon, led by Lt Parker of 5th Rangers Battalion, joined them in the evening coming from Omaha Beach. During two days, the Colonel Rudder's Rangers resisted to several German counter-attacks. Out of ammunition, they had to use captured weapons let on the ground. The destroyer USS Satterlee gave them a useful naval support with the reduction of some Flak guns firing on the Rangers. In the morning of 08th of June, a relief column from Omaha Beach broke through enemy lines at Saint Pierre du Mont and delivered the besieged Rangers.
