Historical Background:
In order to prepare a landing on Bougainville, US General Vandegrift decided to launch a diversion operation on neighbouring Choiseul island. 2nd Battalion, 1st Airborne Rgt of US Marine Corps was in charge to give impression to the enemy that Choiseul was the main objective of the US attack. Landed on the 28th of October on an isolated point of the coast, the Marine battalion attacked two days later Sangigai village, a japanese logistic base on the island. The advance was made in two columns, one along the coast, the second across jungle. This pincer attack surprised the Japanese garrison and the village was captured quickly. Us Marines withdraw before Japanese reinforcements arrived in the village. On 1st of November,3rd Marine Division landed on Bougainville, the diversion was successful.
