The axis were well prepared with the west wall and foxholes. As the US 28th Division moved through Hurtgen forest they met axis defenders who seemed to be everywhere. On November 3rd, they managed to slip into Schmidt. The Axis counter-attacked with Panther tanks and drove them out of Schmidt. The Axis tanks attacked Kommerschidt and destroyed the 28th Division.
