Historical Background:
During operation "Wacht am Rhein", the 7th German army was in charge of the south flank of the offensive. 276.Volksgrenadier Division, from VXXX.Armeekorps, had to cross the Sûre river, capture US artillery positions and continue the advance toward west. On the 16th of December, a dense fog allowed the volksgrenadiers to cross the river and to infiltrate the allied lines. Several US units were isolated in small villages. But this was the defense area of Combat Command A (CCA) of 9th US Armored Division and this formation sent several "Task Forces" to support the surrounded infantry units. The battle lasted four days. The building of a pontoon bridge by the Germans allowed them the crossing of the river by artillery and some "Stugs" but it was not enough reinforcements for the volksgrenadiers to continue their advance. On the 20th of December, 276.Volksgrenadier Division was stopped definitively, only 8 kilometers far from the Sûre river.
