Historical Background:
During the winter 1940-41, border incidents increased between Thai and French troops on the Indochina border. The 3/5 REI, a battalion of Foreign Legion, was ordered to advance to Phum Preav to cover the flank of an offensive made by a French battlegroup to drive back Thai troops from the Yang Deng Kum area. The approach march was in the night and, in the darkness, the French vanguard collided with Thai defensive positions. With the daylight, the battle increased and Thai infantry counter-attacked with air support and some tanks. A Legion platoon was entirely destroyed by a tank attack but these tanks were further destroyed by a 25mm French antitank gun. The battle lasted the whole day. On the evening, the main French offensive on Yang Deng Kum was a failure, so the battalion of Foreign Legion had to withdraw to Phum Thot.
