Historical Background: In the beginning of August 1944, a "Jedburg" airborne team, composed of two French, one British and one Canadian, was dropped on the Ariege area with the aim to coordinate the action of the local French Resistance. The man in charge of this mission was Marcel Bigeard, nicknamed on this occasion, major "Aube". The contact was made with a Spanish guerillas group and then with other local maquis from FFI and FTP (communist Resistance). The attack of the German garrison of Foix was planned for the 19th of August. In the afternoon of this day, the attack began by the destruction of a pillbox near the bridge on the Ariege river. Then the maquis spilled out into the streets of Foix, firing on every German soldier encountered. The German main group was quickly surrounded in a high school used as a strongpoint. In the evening, the German commander of the garrison surrendered, Foix was definitively liberated. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
