Historical Background:
Spring 1945, after the battle of Alsace, the 2nd French Armored Division was ordered to participate in Operation Venerable, which was the capture of the "Festung" Royan on the Atlantic coast. On the 15th of April 1945, the battle group Rouvillois attacked numerous bunkers of Panzerwerk III near Belmont which defended the approaches of Royan. Tanks of 12th Cuirassier Regiment and of 1st Marine Armored Regiment, engineers of the 13th Engineer Battalion supported the infantrymen of 4th Zouave Regiment in the assault of the Panzerwerk. This one was destroyed in the afternoon and units of the 2nd French Armored Division entered in Royan, largely wrecked, in the evening of 15th.
