Historical Background:
For the French Resistance, the plateau of Glieres (near Annecy at 1500 meters of altitude) was designed to be a free area for the maquis of Savoy and a future base to attack the enemy. In the early 1944 the "Glieres Battalion" was composed by young French resistant to the STO, some Spanish Republicans and some FTP (French communist resistance). On the 14th of February, the plateau of Glieres was surrounded by French Vichyst troops and the first fighting occurred at this time between the French Resistance and the French Milice. In March, German troops decided to attack (Unternehmen Hoch-Savoyen). Under continuous German artillery fire and Luftwaffe air attacks, fighting against German Gebirgsjägers well-trained and superior in numbers, the Glieres Battalion received on the 26th of March the order to break off the action and to disperse. This was the beginning of a terrible repression by the enemy (German troops and French Milice). Despite of this tragical end, The battle of Glieres became famous in German occupied France as well as in the free world, showing that the French Resistance was able to battle against the enemy for the freedom of the country.
