Historical Background:
On the 6th of March, 1945, Unternehmen Frühlingserwachen (Spring Awakening) was initiated. Three SS Panzer Corps and the 25th Hungarian Infantry Division began advancing between Lake Balaton and Lake Velence. Soviet commanders had known for a long time that the attack was coming; anti-tank positions, mines, artillery emplacements and other obstacles were prepared for the Germans. Other than these, the Germans faced many other problems. The 2nd SS Das Reich Panzer Division was still not in place at the beginning of the operation, moreover, the spring meltdown made the ground muddy and German Panzers had simply stuck in the mud. Thus German forces were forced to advance slowly, letting the Soviets reinforce strong-points or retreat wherever it was needed.

The town of Dég, which was in the middle of the German advance was captured by the 9th of March, 1945. German forces had reached the Sió Canal further south and established a bridgehead at Simontornya, but they couldn't advance any further. On March 16th the offensive was canceled as the Soviets began offensive operations one day earlier in the Vértes.
