Historical Background:
On the morning of 18th of June 1940, French infantrymen of 3rd Battalion/21st RIC arrived near the village of Saint-Germain-sur-Meuse, totally exhausted. From a week, they withdraw according the orders, fighting during the day and marching during the night. They had no more food to eat for two days and only individual ammunition. Suddenly the enemy appeared, emerging from the edge of Ourches woods. On defensive positions hastily prepared, the French soldiers resisted all the day and night under German artillery and mortar fire, preventing the enemy infantrymen to cross the Meuse river. on the next morning, overwhelmed by the enemy, with no more strength and out of ammo, the survivors of the battalion were taken prisoners. They held out till the end.
